ERCOT Issues RFP to Procure Capacity to Alleviate Winter ConcernsAUSTIN - The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) issued a request for proposals to stakeholders to procure up to 3,000 MW of generation or demand response capacity to meet load and reserve requirements during the winter 2023-24 peak load season (Dec. 1, 2023, through Feb. 29, 2024).ERCOT cited “several factors, including significant peak load growth since last winter, recent and proposed retirements of dispatchable Generation Resources, and recent extreme winter weather events, including Winter Storm Elliott in December 2022, Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, and the 2018 and 2011 winter storms, each of which resulted in abnormally high demand during winter weather.” It now seeks additional capacity under its “authority to prevent an anticipated Emergency Condition.”Read the complete article herehttps://lnkd.in/dRUt_ryf

The current east coast heat wave reminds me of the events leading up to the great northeast blackout of 2003. The warm temperatures twenty years ago were much like the current temperatures we’re experiencing. I was a First Lieutenant in the Army, had just returned from deployment a day or two prior, and was looking for an apartment to rent. I had just finished signing a lease agreement and was refueling my car for the drive back to Fort Drum. The power went out, not to return for three days. They blamed it on a Canadian tree branch.Friendly reminder: Warm temperatures strain the power grid and we should all be ready for potential disruptions. Facility managers, have you tested your backup generation lately? Homeowners, do you have a reasonable plan to stay cool and protect refrigerated/frozen foods during an outage?#Summer2023isGoingToBeHOT #haveaplan #resilience

Update from NES. Saturday 9:30am CST December 10, 2023We at the Nashville Electric Service are deeply saddened by the loss of life as a result of last night’s severe storms. Our hearts go out to all those affected. We know how resilient Nashville is, and we pledge to continue to work 24/7 to do our part to help our city recover. Our crews continue to make progress restoring power after last night’s deadly storms hit Nashville. At this hour, NES has restored power to nearly 17,000 customers. While this is significant progress, there continue to be about 27,000 customers without power. NES crews will continue to work around the clock until all power is restored, however damage is severe in some areas, and it will take our crews time to assess and restore power in these areas.NES substations in Hendersonville and North Nashville received significant damage. That damage is also impacting the transmission system coming out of the Saundersville and Edenworld substations. The majority of the current outages are fed from these substations. Our crews are on site at each substation working to get them back online as soon as possible.REMINDER:Never go near fallen power lines. If you encounter one, assume that it is still live and carries an electric charge. Stay away and call 911 and caution anyone nearby about the hazard. If you experience a power outage, report it right away through NESPower.com or by calling 615-736-6900 or by texting “OUT” to 637797(NESPWR) if you enabled the texting function on your account (register by logging in to your account at NESPower.com/my-account and accessing text alerts from the menu).NES Outage Map: https://lnkd.in/eH7DPVMm

Rocky Mountain Power customers, if you haven't seen anything about this from them, please read this to be aware. We received a letter from them for HOA's we manage, stating that when there are conditions that are more likely to create wildfires, they alter some things. They said "we may use protective devices on our lines with more sensitive settings that will de-energize power equipment when there is a short circuit detected."They went on, "A power outage is more likely to occur when these settings are utilized. For the 2023 wildfire season, based on elevated conditions in the region, we are using more sensitive protective settings in your area. As a result, if an outage occurs during the 2023 wildfire season, you may experience a longer-than-typical outage as our field personnel work to confirm that power can be safely turned back on."Thought I would share because we should all work on being more prepared for power outages that last longer than we are used to.Kind of makes me think about what some people would do if they only have EV's.Preparing for such situations is not something exclusive to doom and gloom type people, but something we should all do.
