Friday, June 14

Kilgore Memorial Library will hold Story Time and Craft with Mrs. B on Friday, June 14 starting at 10 a.m. Preschoolers are invited to come and learn about our climates.

Kids are invited to Kilgore Memorial Library on Friday, June 14 from 2-4 p.m. for Gaming with Tyler as part of their 2024 Summer Reading Program.

Game Night will be held at Espressions in Aurora on Friday, June 14 from 6-8 p.m. Bring a game and some friends or just come and play one of ours and make some friends. Either way come join us for fun, games and community.

The Fairmont Public Library 2024 Summer Reading Program for Preschool to age 8 will be held on Friday, June 14 at 10 a.m. Parents are encouraged to arrange for safe escort to and from the library. Library staff are not responsible for children before or after the program.

The Can Care-A-Van will be in Geneva on Friday, June 14 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Blue Valley Community Action, 130 S. 8th Street. Help stock local food pantries with nonperishable food items. Benefiting pantries: Geneva, Fairmont, Ohiowa, Shickley, Exeter, Milligan, Grafton and Strang. We especially need: flour, sugar, toiletries, pasta, crackers, spaghetti sauce, canned meats, tuna/hamburger helper, snack food items for kids, cereal, pork/baked beans. Blinker Fluid will be performing at Overtime Grill and Lounge (842 G Street in Geneva) on Friday June 14. Music begins at 6 p.m. with Polka Music by Shandra followed by Blinker Fluid from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Proceeds will benefit Geneva Senior Center.

Pitch and Rummikub will be played at the York Senior Center on Friday, June 14 starting at 1 p.m.

Kick off the summer with a pool party just for middle schoolers! Celebrate graduating 8th grade, getting ready to go to 6th grade in the fall and all others in between. The pool is open just for you! Sixth through eighth graders are welcome to come to the York Family Aquatic Center on Friday, June 14 from 8-10 p.m.

Saturday, June 15

The York Area Cruisers will hold their 2nd Annual Car Show on Saturday, June 15 (rain or shine) at Harrison Park, 140 S. Kingsley Ave. in York. Registration will be held from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. with the show running from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. Trophies, food, music, 30 classes plus specialty awards, dash plaques for 1st one hundred and a model car contest for the kids. The Stromsburg Swedish Festival Parade will take place on Saturday, June 15 starting at 6 p.m. This year’s theme is “God Jul” (Swedish Christmas in June). Sign your float up now to be judged in the following categories: Jolliest Swede Award (Best representation of parade theme); Santa’s Sleigh Award (Most interesting/unique ride on wheels) and Elves Award (Best youth activity of club). The Anna Bemis Palmer Museum and Doug Rood Photography will be hosting an Outdoor Photography Class on Saturday, June 15 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Harrison Park, 140 S. Kingsley Ave. in York. Doug will be teaching about different settings and camera features. The York Area Cruisers 2nd Annual Car Show will be going on at the same time and will be a great opportunity to practice and show off what you learned. We will meet by the basketball courts for the class before wandering over to the car show. Participation is free – just bring your own camera or smartphone.

Foundation for Applied Conservative Leadership from Falmouth, Va. will be hosting a class in York on Saturday, June 15 at the Cornerstone Event Center from 9 a.m. — 5:30 p.m. This class will help you understand how the political process REALLY works, because when you understand how the political process works, you can make it work to advance the issues and causes you believe in that will restore America to its small-government, constitutional roots. Market on the Square will be held in Aurora on Saturday, June 15 from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Courthouse parking lot.

Narnia Book Club will be held at Espressions in Aurora on Saturday, June 15 starting at 9:30 a.m. We are reading the chapters 4-6 of “Prince Caspian” by C.S. Lewis. New members are always welcome.

Scribbles with Ella will be held at Espressions in Aurora on Saturday, June 15 starting at 10:30 a.m. Free guided drawing lessons with Ella for all ages. This month’s theme: Norwhal & Jelly.

Come to Espressions in Aurora and learn about the art of Squeegee Painting with Cindy McClellan on Saturday, June 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. Come and learn the art of painting with a squeegee, it’s fun and creative. The class costs $30 per person which covers all of the supplies.

The Stromsburg Public Library will host a Swedish Festival Program on Saturday, June 15 from 2 to 3 p.m. Swedish Kurbits painting with Kathryn Larson will be the feature.

Relay For Life of York County will be held on Saturday, June 15 at the York County Fairgrounds. The Relay For Life is more than a walk – it’s a chance to come together in your local community to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against every cancer as we come together for every life. This year’s Relay will include the 2nd Annual BBQ Competition by the Midwest Barbeque Association. Pork butt and ribs plus baked beans, chips and beverages will be served. The competition will begin at 6 a.m. with the meal starting at 5 p.m. If you would like to register for the BBQ Competition go to mwbabbq.org. Luminaries for the Luminaria Ceremony are currently being sold. The Luminaria Ceremony is a signature element of every Relay For Life. At nightfall, these homemade paper lanterns, decorated with the names of loved ones, are lit in honor and in memory of a life touched by cancer. The ceremony includes a moment of silence for those we have lost. When you make a donation for a Luminaria, you are honoring a loved one while helping the American Cancer Society continue to fight cancer on all fronts. Monday, June 17

Join York Parks & Rec and the 4-H Extension office as we team up for a fun-filled week of learning all about archery during Archery Camp Monday, June 17 through Thursday, June 20 from 10:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. We will start with the basics and introduce safety topics before participants get to shoot. Then, we will wrap up the week at Recharge Lake’s Upper Big Blue Outdoor Archery Range. Bows and arrows will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own if you have them. Open to kids ages 8-13 years old. Meet at the Cornerstone Event Center at the York County Fairgrounds on Monday through Wednesday and at the Upper Big Blue Outdoor Archery Range on Thursday. The Polk County Health Department will hold immunization clinics at the Polk County Health Department in Stromsburg on Monday, June 17, 2024, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. An appointment is required. Infant, Kindergarten, 7th Grade and college entry vaccines are available for “Vaccine For Children” eligible children from birth through 18 years of age. Reminder — All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and a record of all previous immunizations is required. Donations are appreciated, however services will not be denied to those who have a true inability to pay. Campers in grades Kindergarten through 5th Grade will meet from 1 to 5 p.m. at the York City Auditorium on Monday, East Hill Park on Tuesday through Thursday and at the York Family Aquatic Center on Friday.

Faith Lutheran will hold Vacation Bible School June 17 – 21 from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. daily. This year’s theme is the Great Jungle Journey. Float 4 Life is a class designed for young kids to learn how to survival float if they were to ever fall into water when no one else is around. Our trained staff will teach every child how to self-rescue. Session 1 will be held June 17-28 (Monday – Friday, no Wednesdays) from 12:15 – 12:30 p.m.; 2:50 – 3 p.m. or 5:50 to 6 p.m. at the York Family Aquatic Center. Open to infants, toddlers, kids and anyone who wants to learn.

Tuesday, June 18

Kilgore Memorial Library will hold Book Buddies on Tuesday, June 18 at 10 a.m.

York Young Professionals will host Lattes with Leaders on Tuesday, June 18 from 7 to 8 a.m. at Daylight Donuts. Join us for breakfast while listening to Heather Hultgrien of Renewed Horizons talk about her journey to becoming a leader within the community. Free donuts for members. Guests are welcome to join us at their expense. No RSVP required.

Henderson will hold their Farmer’s Market on Tuesday, June 18 in the Henderson Downtown Park from 5 to 7 p.m. Henderson Health Care Services Foundation will be providing the evening meal.

Summer Reading will take place at Heartland on Tuesday, June 18 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Elementary Library. All preschool – elementary students are welcome to participate. Weekly prizes will be awarded for every 100 minutes read. Children reading 5 out of the 6 weeks will be rewarded with a grand prize.

Yorklympics 2024 York Quest Scavenger Hunt will be held on Tuesday, June 18 from 3 to 6 p.m. This challenge will begin at the York Chamber Office, 603 N. Lincoln in York for a Downtown Scavenger Hunt! Join us for a scavenger hunt in downtown York. Teams need a minimum of two members for this event, but we encourage all members to join in for a fun-filled adventure of teamwork and discovery. Pick up your first clue between 3 and 4 p.m. Navigate through the downtown, solving challenging riddles and completing tasks to emerge victorious in this quest. Are you up for the challenge?

On Thursday, June 20 the Self-Advocacy Group will meet from 9 – 10 a.m. Connect and learn about self-advocacy and various skills we can use in everyday life. From 10:30 — 11:30 a.m. the W.R.A.P. Group will meet. Wellness Recovery Action Plan (W.R.A.P.) supports you in identifying wellness tools and creating action plans to implement in your everyday life. Discover the sweet world of sugar beets! Is all sugar created equal? Learn about the life cycle of the sugar beet while using your science skills to investigate if sugar beet sugar and cane sugar has the same sugar content. June 20-22

The Nimble Thimble Quilt Guild announces their annual show, “Threads That Bind Us”, during A’Ror’N Days June 20-22. It will be held at the Plainsman Museum, 210 16th St, Aurora, open 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day. This multi-generational theme will lend to a wide variety of quilts from the past to the present, of interest to everyone. This year’s featured quilters are a mother-daughter team — Deb Girard and Missy Lemmons. They will have many special quilts on display including four made by family members using the same pattern, but different color palettes. The results are amazing! An addition this year are small vignettes of antique children’s doll quilts. The quilt show highlight will be Quilts of Valor presented to six local veterans at 10:00 Saturday morning. The quilts are made by guild members, supported by funding from the Hamilton Community Foundation. Skill building demonstrations will be: Thursday, Hand Piecing at 1 p.m.; AcuQuilt Demonstration at 2:30 p.m.; Friday, Wool Applique at 10:30 a.m.; Hand Piecing at 1 p.m.; Paper Piecing at 2:30 p.m. A boutique with quilty items for sale and light refreshments round out the show. An $8 admission fee covers entrance for all three days.

Come to the York Family Aquatic Center for a midnight swim on Friday, June 21 from 10 p.m. until 12 a.m. Swim under the stars, play water games in the dark, and enjoy the perfect summer night. Open to everyone.

On Friday, June 21 Manor’s Build-A-Burger will be held at the Fairmont Legion at 5 p.m. at 7 p.m. is the Scavenger Hunt which will start at Main Street Park. The Glow Ladder Ball Tournament will start at 9 p.m. at the ballfield.

Let your creative mind paint during York Parks & Rec’s Art in the Park on Saturday, June 22 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Come enjoy an art class in the park taught by Angie Schroetlin while she walks you through your painting step-by-step. Everything will be provided, so all you have to do is show up at East Hill Park in York.

Fairmont will hold their 148th annual Old Settlers Picnic on June 21-23. On Saturday, May 22 events kick off at 8 a.m. with the Fun Run/Walk starting at the Fairmont Legion. The Bloody Mary Bar with Mimosas & Sangrias and breakfast sandwiches will start at 9 a.m. at the Fairmont Legion. Vintage Market on Main will be held from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and will include vendors and food trucks. Poker Run registration will begin at 9 a.m. with Kick Stands Up at 11 a.m. sponsored by Legion Riders and the Fairmont Legion. The Soda Shoppe will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. for the Museum & Treats. Kids Program by Absolute Science: Big Bang Bubbles will take place at 2 p.m. at the Fairmont Legion Hall. The Dinger Derby will kick off at 3 p.m. at the Fairmont Ball Field. The Youth Fire Fighter Experience will be held at the Fairmont Fire Department at 4 p.m. P & D Foods and more food truck will be on hand starting at 5 p.m. and the Whiskey Bent Band will perform at the Fairmont Legion starting at 8 p.m.

The Fairmont Senior Center will hold a Cream Can Dinner fundraiser on Saturday, June 22 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Come and enjoy tender flame cooked smoked sausage, potatoes, cabbage, corn, onions and carrots in a buttery seasoned sauce. Complimented with roll, dessert and refreshments. Profits will be used to replace cookware for the center as well as for nice table cloths and placemats. A free will offering of $8 is suggested.

The Patriot Guard Riders (a volunteer member organization with riders from across the nation, who attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes) will be in York late afternoon on Saturday, June 22. Their mission is to bring an airport cart containing a U.S. Navy veteran’s cremains from the Seattle/ Tacoma Airport to Nashville where a “Pony Express” relay will provide the final leg of his journey to New Jersey. We want to give them a warm welcome in York. The local Boy Scout troops will be performing a flag raise and Pledge of Allegiance Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Elks lodge, with a burger feed to follow for the Patriot Riders and Elks members and guests. Make tracks to the Annual MCHI A’ROR’N Days Fun Run & Wellness Walk sponsored by Memorial Rehabilitation on Saturday, June 22 at 5th & O Streets in Aurora. Registration and check-in will begin at 6:15 a.m. the 5K Fun Run and 5K Wellness Walk will start at 7:05 a.m. The 1 Mile Walk for Seniors will begin at 7:10 a.m. The 5K Fun Run Award Ceremony will be held at 7:35 a.m. and the Kids Fun Run will start at 7:45 a.m. Register at MemorialCommunityHealth.org.

Downtown Geneva shoppers will vote on their favorite kid-based business for two age groups: 5-11 & 12-18. Winners get a small business basket with items from other local small businesses. “Fun Facts & Stories of Henderson’s Past” luncheon to be held on Saturday, June 22 at 11:30 a.m. at Henderson Heritage Mennonite Park in the Agriculture Building. Over the years, while researching Henderson’s history and working on other historical projects, volunteers have discovered some unique and often unknown facts about Henderson that they will share at the luncheon. Fairmont will hold their 148th annual Old Settlers Picnic on June 21-23. On Sunday, June 23 a Community Church Service will be held at the Main Street Park starting at 11 a.m. Bring a lawn chair. A Church Yum Yum Meal will be served at the Main Street Park at 12 p.m. and Frisbee Golf will take place at the ballfield starting at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m. the Horseshoe Tournament will kick off and at 5 p.m. the Marvin & Deloris Roper Memorial Parade will take place. Line up at the Middle School by 4:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m. the Community Picnic with Inflatable will be held at the Pool Park and will be catered by Smokin’ Reefers. Music by EJ the DJ will be performed from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Pool Park and then at 7 p.m. Chuck A Duck will take place at the Fairmont Pool. And finally, Fireworks at the Ball Field will take place starting at 9:45 p.m. a rain date of June 30 has been set.

York Adopt A Pet will be holding their 9th annual Run/Walk Fur Luv on Saturday, June 29 at the YAAP shelter (1511 North Platte Ave). There will be a 1-mile walk walk/run starting at 8 a.m. and then a 5k run starting at 8:30 a.m. Medals will be given for both races. For the 1-mile walk a 1st place medal will be given for boys and girls in ages 8-14 and ages 7 and under. Then for the 5k, 1st and 2nd place medals will be given for each age division. There will be some new activities during the event for both you and your pet to enjoy!

The Duke Boys Basketball Team will host the 2nd Annual York Basketball Golf Scramble on Friday, July 12 starting at 9 a.m. at the York Country Club. The cost is $400 per team. Yorklympics 2024 Mind Masters Trivia Challenge Extravaganza will be held on Monday, Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Chances R Beer Garden, 124 W. 5th Street for Trivia Night. This event will be an evening of brainteasing questions and a variety of themed rounds. This event can be your entire team but requires at least two members. Put your heads together and engage in a battle of wits as you tackle a variety of trivia categories. Get ready to show off your smarts and have a blast at our Trivia Night in the Beer Garden!

Saturday, Sept. 7

Yorklympics 2024 Closing Ceremony will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Elks Club, 121 W. 6th Street in York. Celebrate the end of a fantastic summer competition series with a social hour at the Elks Club. Bring a snack to share and enjoy some time mingling with all the teams. It’s a great opportunity to unwind, share stories and make lasting memories with fellow participants. During the Closing Ceremonies we will award top team medals. Don’t miss the highlight of the evening, the presentation of the coveted traveling trophy to the winning team.
