Is Wizz a dating app? ›

Despite its similarities to apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Wink, Wizz is not strictly marketed as a dating app but rather as a way to make new friends around the world based on common interests.

The whole point of Wizz is chatting with strangers — and with no guarantee of accurate age verification — catfishing, grooming, and eventual online sexual abuse are all a possibility.

The steps were taken after the National Center on Sexual Exploitation raised concerns about alleged sextortion scams appearing on the site. Wizz, a social media app growing popular among teens in the U.S., was removed from the Apple app store and Google Play this week.

The app, Wizz, allows users to scroll through profiles that show a person's picture, first name, age, state and zodiac sign. Wizz advertises the app as a “safe space” to meet new friends and allows users as young as 13 to join and connect with users of a similar age.

You need to be 13 or over to use Wizz. Once you have installed the Wizz App, you will have to set up an account to use Wizz, and to provide personal information. Your account and personal information are important. Keep them safe and accurate.

It allows users to find/meet new friends by scrolling through a live feed of other users. Once someone peaks your interest in the live feed you can begin messaging back and forth through Wizz. Alternatively, and most commonly, users share their snap or instagram accounts and ask users to add them.

A Network Contagion Reseach Institute report last month identified the Wizz app among those most often used by cybercriminals to target minors and engage in what's known as “financial sextortion.” The group is a nonprofit organization devoted to identifying and forecasting “cyber-social threats.”
