History
USA Today was first published on September 15, 1982, with the motto "The Nation's Newspaper." Allen H. Neuharth founded the news outlet while he was serving as chairman and chief executive officer of Gannett Inc.[1]
USA Today is published on a Monday through Friday basis, with no weekend editions.[1]
Editorial positions
Up until the 2012 presidential election, USA Today had a policy of not endorsing candidates in presidential elections.[3] In 2016, the paper broke with its traditional stance by coming out against the candidacy of Donald Trump (R). The paper's editorial board concluded, "This year, the choice isn’t between two capable major party nominees who happen to have significant ideological differences. This year, one of the candidates — Republican nominee Donald Trump — is, by unanimous consensus of the Editorial Board, unfit for the presidency." The board noted that their position was not a unanimous endorsem*nt of Clinton. Rather, the board suggested: " Our bottom-line advice for voters is this: Stay true to your convictions. That might mean a vote for Clinton, the most plausible alternative to keep Trump out of the White House. Or it might mean a third-party candidate. Or a write-in. Or a focus on down-ballot candidates who will serve the nation honestly, try to heal its divisions, and work to solve its problems."[4]
